The Additive Manufacturing – Design Engineer role supports the Wabtec Additive Manufacturing (AM) team to develop new products for the Wabtec product portfolio. This role will interact with customers of the AM team to convey the benefits of AM, update the desired product to optimize the impact that AM can have on the product, and educate customers on future design applications for the technology. The AM – Design Engineer will identify the correct product groups in Wabtec’s product offerings to pursue in applying AM technology. There is a need to have a strong understanding of AM design, AM processes, rail products, and the business understanding of AM technology.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Work with customers of AM team to evaluate potential AM products. Educate customers on how to find the best use-cases of AM parts, convey the benefits of the technology, and how to align the design with the manufacturing process.
• Utilize design for AM knowledge to design rail products in a manner to optimize the manufacturing and the economics of the targeted product.
• Work with the manufacturing team to understand all processing conditions required to produce a part, and then design the AM part with these considerations in mind.
• Lead the tollgate and PPAP process when identified rail parts are determined to be brought into production.

Essential Qualifications:

• Mechanical Engineering degree from an accredited university.
• 3+ years of experience designing for additive manufacturing across both polymer and metal technologies.
• Experience with a variety of CAD software programs to perform the necessary supporting steps in producing an AM product.
• 3+ years of working within AM industry, having a strong knowledge base of design, materials, and processes across metal and polymer AM technologies.
• Structural & simulation experience to analyze the environmental conditions of the intended AM product.
• Experience with material testing related to additive manufacturing.
• Strong understanding of cost implications across the AM process to analyze business impact.
• Knowledge of the rail industry within both freight and transit segments.
