A Day in the Life Mechanical Engineer O-arm
The Mechanical Engineer is a primary contributor within the Medtronic MEIC engineering team to develop and support the O-arm O2 and future imaging products.
This Mechanical Engineer is a technical leader and contributor in a fast-paced environment, working within a team to deliver advanced technical expertise and solutions to complex engineering problems:
- Working as part of an engineering team in the Imaging group, addressing supplier change orders from the O-arm suppliers.
- Coordinate resources, from various departments, to resolve issues and implement changes.
- Perform qualifications to support changes to existing processes, components, and/or materials.
- Develop and perform engineering tests, measurements, and analysis.
- Troubleshoot technical problems, and determine, and execute resolution plans.
- Ensure that the product is manufactured in accordance with applicable industry standards, regulatory requirements, and customer requirements. In the case where corrective action is needed, this person will lead mitigation activities.
- Create and maintain the documentation necessary to ensure the consistent manufacture of products (processes, drawings, and shop floor paperwork).
- Interface with Production, Manufacturing Engineering, and Research and Development organizations to integrate new drawings, specifications, or processes into the existing manufacturing site/areas.
- Comply with applicable FDA and international regulatory laws/standards and the Medtronic Code of Conduct.
- Other responsibilities as assigned or required to ensure project success.
Must-Have: Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant science-related discipline with 4 years of engineering experience
OR - An advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant science-related discipline with 2 years of engineering experience
Nice to Have
- 4+ years of medical device engineering experience
- Mechanical Design Engineering experience
- Experience with medical capital equipment
- Proficiency with Solidworks 3D Modeling Software and PLM
- Design skills include an understanding of drafting standards, design progression, GD&T in compliance with ASTM Y14.5
- Experience releasing engineering change orders; Experience with Agile product life cycle management a plus.
- Experience with Solidworks simulation for static, dynamic, and thermal analyses is a plus.
- Prior experience with Motion systems design including belt drives, ball screws, stepper motors, DC servo motors, pulley mechanisms, linkages, drive cables, gears, motors, sensor and complex electromechanical assemblies.
- Experience with Mechatronics.
- Understanding of common manufacturing processes (i.e. Injection Molding, Metal Forming, Machining, turning, Heat Treating etc)
- Working knowledge of rapid prototyping, material selection, and product design and process specifications
- Ability to compile and organize technical data using Excel, Word, or Access and consolidate the information into a released engineering (characterization) report
- Trained/Certified in Lean and/or 6 Sigma
- Working knowledge of DFMEA and PFMEA
- Working knowledge of material handling principles
- Able to use various measurement devices (e.g., calipers, micrometers, gauges, CMM’s etc.)
- Experience calculating Bolt torques for metal and plastic applications.
