Overview & Responsibilities

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Mechanical Engineer’s major responsibly is to ensure proper mechanical package design & procurement for an ELLIOTT GROUP rotating equipment package. Package design includes electric motor with switchgears/VSDs/transformers, gearboxes (incl. Vorecon), API614 oil system (including rundown tank), seal gas system (dry gas seal console per API614/692) , surface condensers, gland condensers, condensate pumps(API610) with steam turbines(per API611), sealing steam unit, steam/gas strainers/traps/non return valves(NRVs), oil accumulators, process PSVs/PCVs, gas coolers, air compressor inlet filters/blow off silencers, oil/water injection units, Package Piping design and material selection etc.

In addition to these technical role, the Mechanical Engineer’s is also responsible for the project schedules, budget, time management and communication with internally with other ELLIOTT GROUP teams and external customers.

The purpose of the position is to hire more advanced engineering and leadership experience to an individual with equivalent experience to an ENGINEER I, II, III or IV Mechanical Engineer. The position will function primarily as a Mechanical Engineer for package design to achieve equitable and satisfactory execution of contracts, within project budgets and to project schedules on projects of limited complexity.

The position can also function as a support element to a more senior engineering staff member, who is functioning as Lead Engineer on a large or complex project. In the support role, the position will provide the Lead Engineer, with assistance to achieve the same equitable and satisfactory execution of contracts, within project budgets and to project schedules.

The position will also be responsible for fulfilling the following:
  • Maintain an environment of professional and ethical conduct within ELLIOTT GROUP.
  • Follow department process work standards and procedures to achieve best-in-class contract execution as a member of Project Engineering.
  • Interface between the Project Engineer, suppliers, and customers both internal and external.

  • Provide input as requested for continuous improvement of ELLIOTT GROUP processes.

BACKGROUND and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Engineering / Technology, or equivalent four-year academic qualification.
  • Minimum of typically two (2) to eighteen (18) years of experience, as a Mechanical Design Engineer or Turbomachinery Auxiliaries System Design Engineer or equivalent work experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage sub-suppliers.
  • Demonstrated ability provide quality customer service and support.
  • Exhibits desire for continuous improvement, continuous education, training, and personal development.
  • Possesses good basic work habits, promptness, and dependability.

  • Experience/Exposure to AutoCAD and 3D modelling software.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to a dynamic work environment.
  • Developed time management skills, with an ability to balance demand among various projects.
  • Preferred requirements: Turbo- machinery auxiliary systems, Mechanical Items and Equipment design engineering and procurement experience.
NATURE OF THE JOB

The Mechanical Engineer functions as the primary resource for technical design and coordination regarding turbomachinery auxiliary system and mechanical equipment of ELLIOTT Group Turbomachinery package. The Mechanical Engineer also functions as the primary technical contact for sub-suppliers of Mechanical and Fluid systems related components to achieve contract execution.

The principle daily activities of this job involve collecting and analyzing detailed technical information, and effectively communicating that information regarding the assigned project to the appropriate organization. Responding to new or unfamiliar complex situations is a common experience, however, guidance and direction from others will still be required. This position will expose the individual to direct customer contact.

The nature of the job is designed to further build upon the foundation of knowledge gained as an ENGINEER I or II or III Mechanical Engineer, or from previous equivalent work experience. Training for the position will be aimed at self-development of specialization in technical areas and begin to develop organizational leadership skills.

The individual will be encouraged to further develop their individual contribution to the Project Engineering departmental goals, to the extent that activities covered by established policies or standard procedures can be successfully managed.

Expected travel is around 10-30% typically.

Additional work hours or temporary schedule adjustment may be required.

Engineering, Project Manager, or another ELLIOTT senior staff member.

SUPERVISION

Direction of other’s work efforts will be required such as direction to design staff, junior engineers, and document control staff.

The individual may be asked to provide direction to intern, rotational engineer, ENGINEER I – Mechanical Engineer, ENGINEER II – Mechanical Engineer, ENGINEER III – Mechanical Engineer positions as mentoring or project relationships as required.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/COMPETENCIES

Continued building understanding of the ELLIOTT organization, its product lines, Project Engineering Group work procedures, and methods. The position requires the continued development in the area of Mechanical engineering with the expectation that the individual is to develop as a resource to the department in this area.

  • Continue building an understanding of industry related standards, such as API 612, 610, 614, 617, 670, 692, ASTM. Additionally, the position requires a sound understanding of other codes and standards frequently encountered in the petrochemical and oil and gas industries.
  • Promote a positive attitude for a safe and healthy work environment, as well as awareness for high quality products and services from Project Engineering, in support of ELLIOTT GROUP management initiatives.
  • Maintain an environment for professional and ethical conduct as directed by ELLIOTT corporate policies and ELLIOTT Code of Ethics.
  • Review and analysis of customer specifications.
  • Review, revision, and submittal of ELLIOTT GROUP internal design specification information.
  • Creation of purchase requisitions for material procurement, including all supporting technical documentation
  • Actively participate in Project Transfer Meetings (TM1 and TM2), manage transfer of project technical information from Proposal stage to Execution stage.
  • Actively participate in key project meetings when required, including Kick Off Meeting (KOM), HAZOP meeting, Customer Coordination Meeting (CCM), Pre-Inspection Meeting (PIM) and Design Review Meetings (DRM).
  • Facilitate major supplier meetings with client, and ELLIOTT personnel, including Kick Off Meeting (KOM), Customer
  • Coordination Meeting (CCM), Pre-Inspection Meeting (PIM) and Design Review Meetings (DRM), with the assistance of the Project Manager.
  • Correspondence, documents, and information to be submitted to the client for approval or record, through the Project Engineer.
  • Provide due diligence in the retention of information sufficient to maintain adequate knowledge of the project for ‘downstream’ operations both internal and external to ELLIOTT GROUP.
  • Ability to understand turbomachinery auxiliary systems and related equipment functionalities. Also, shall have ability procure same as external skids /items/equipment from external suppliers through purchase requisitions.
  • Attend turbomachinery package 3D model reviews and provide technical assistance as Mechanical Engineer.
  • Support and Lead in interpreting customer specifications and requisitioning components to meet those specifications.
  • Full Mechanical design and procurement of Lube oil console as per API614 including equipment selection of Pump, Motors Filters, Accumulators, Rundown Tank, and Oil Mist Eliminator.
  • Full Mechanical design and procurement of Dry Gas Seal Systems as per API692.
  • Review supplier documentation/calculations/ typical mechanical and general layouts drawings.
  • Package Piping design and material selection.
