Key Purpose of the Job

The Assistant Manager is responsible for overseeing a team of operators and associates to execute production activities during a shift. The role focuses on ensuring that the shift plan is followed, production efficiency is maintained, and quality and safety standards are adhered to.

Key Activities & Responsibilities

Operations

  • Implement work schedules and production sequences for operators according to the shift plan.
  • Provide manpower input to the Production Manager for optimal resource planning.
  • Assess resources to ensure a smooth production flow.
  • Supervise production to ensure adherence to the production schedule.
  • Resolve conflicts or issues related to work allocation.
  • Monitor daily production logs and various production parameters (output quality, machine uptime, etc.).
  • Ensure production targets are met and provide inputs for upcoming shift targets.
  • Manage in-process materials inventory and ensure material safety during shifts.

Production Quality

  • Ensure compliance with quality standards and standard operating procedures.
  • Aim for reductions in rejections and internal rework to improve operational efficiency.
  • Communicate quality requirements to operators and monitor their adherence.

Cost Management

  • Promote cost-saving initiatives through optimal use of machines, manpower, energy, and other resources.
  • Encourage efficient material usage and minimize waste.
  • Foster awareness about maintenance processes and preventive maintenance practices.

Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE)

  • Promote adherence to safety measures and encourage safety awareness.
  • Train operators on Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) practices.
  • Maintain hygiene and cleanliness on the shop floor in alignment with company policies.

Collaboration with Other Departments

  • Collaborate with quality, engineering, technical, and maintenance teams to improve operational efficiency and resolve issues.
  • Coordinate with the Quality team for inspection and testing of in-process and finished goods.

MIS, Reports & Administration

  • Maintain and update production reports such as daily shift logs and production targets.
  • Ensure accurate and timely updates in SAP.
  • Manage operators’ leave allocation and absenteeism.

Employee Development

  • Identify training needs and provide on-the-job training to operators.
  • Motivate and coach operators for better performance.
  • Encourage participation in suggestion schemes and quality circles (SPARSH circles).

Improvement Activities

  • Contribute to quality improvement projects (QIPs) and process improvement activities like Kaizen, Muri, Muda, and Mura.
  • Identify and address unsafe conditions and support corrective actions through cross-functional teamwork.

Education & Experience Required

  • Education: Diploma/B.E. in Production/Mechanical/Electrical/E&E.
  • Experience: 1-6 years of experience in a manufacturing setup, preferably in the tyre industry.

This role is suited for individuals with a strong understanding of production processes, a proactive approach to safety and quality, and the ability to lead and motivate teams in a manufacturing environment.
