Location – Bengaluru, Karnataka, IN

Job description

Job Description Summary

The engineer in this role will be responsible for delivering priorities of Mechanical systems and Fan & Compressor Airfoil Tools and Methods.

The Mechanical Systems discipline encompasses the design and analysis of rolling element bearings, air and oil seals, housing and support structures, compressible and incompressible fluid systems, and power & accessory drive systems (gearboxes/gear trains).

Fan & Compressor airfoil is the key drivers in engine performance. GE is a pioneer in blade design and technology. In this role, you will get a unique opportunity to understand the complex interaction of mechanical loads, aero performance, and material technology that are seen in the design process.

The Tools Engineer will support tools and methods activity for jet engine Mechanical Systems design & analysis, and the Bearings, Seals, & Drives (BSD) suite of tools. Tools in the BSD tools suite vary in complexity and cover all phases of the design cycle from preliminary design to certification.

In this role, you will use your mechanical engineering knowledge, to understand the complex behavior of Mechanical Systems and Compressor blades, and collaborate with domain experts and other design engineers across businesses like GE-Aviation and GE-Power, to understand design, manufacturing, and durability challenges.

The Tools Engineer will be expected to help with design process automation and standardization and to develop a working knowledge of tool use to support end-users and complete analyses. Role responsibilities include the development and maintenance of analytical tools to support design teams in analysis tasks as well as testing, deployment, and integration of both internal and external tools. Role responsibilities also include conceptualizing, developing, and supporting physics-based tools which will be applied during the conceptual design as well as detailed design.

The role demands to understand of gas turbine fundamentals, converting engineering requirements into software needs, and collaborating with the design and hardware engineers. It is preferred that the engineer have some experience in at least one aspect of Mechanical Systems as described above and be interested in learning more about the discipline.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and validate methods/algorithms/analytics and software in Mechanical Systems, Fan & Compressor airfoils
  • Assist in maintenance, deployment, and integration of Mechanical Systems, Fan & Compressor airfoils tools
  • Support modernization of tools for end-user experience and system compatibility
  • Collaborate with and support design teams on software-based solutions for analysis tasks and standard work
  • Work collaboratively with Tech Lead and Team Manager for risk resolution and project management
  • Ensure on-time project deliverables & resolution of bugs and issues related to production software
  • Ensure proper validation, review, and documentation of analytical tools and methods

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s in Mechanical / Aerospace Engineering with minimum 2 years of industry experience
  • Successful demonstration of solving a relevant industry problem
  • Experience in developing methods, algorithms, and software, preferably in a Mechanical Systems, Fan & Compressor airfoils discipline
  • Proficiency in using FEA software (ANSYS)
  • Demonstrated programming skills, preferably in VB.net, VBA, Python, Fortran, and C++
  • Experience maintaining software for system compatibility
  • Team player with good problem-solving and communication skills

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience and interest in the Mechanical Systems discipline (bearings, seals, fluid systems, drive systems), Fan & Compressor airfoils
  • Experience in the aerospace/energy industry with sound knowledge of mechanical/structural analysis
  • Demonstrated awareness of industry and technology trends in aerospace & data science
  • Ability to develop, modify and utilize custom computer codes in various languages (including ANSYS APDL)
  • Exposure to software lifecycle management
  • Experience in software testing (Unit & System Level)
  • Exposure to LEAN & Agile principles
  • Experience working with personnel from multiple engineering sites
