Job Description ( Design Engineer – Machine Systems Cooling) :

Caterpillar Large Power System Division is looking for a Design Engineer to accelerate the development and application implementation of Machine cooling system and other thermal management components in Hydraulic mining shovels [HMS], Off Highway truck [OHT], Large mining truck [LMT], and other relevant programs. In this role, you will successfully develop cooling systems and components to meet the thermal management requirements for machine projects in Resource Industry markets. Candidates will have to work closely with application engineers, cooling technical leads, and product groups to understand application requirements to develop the technical specifications to support the component selection process within the organization, and to have the capability of handling suppliers.

Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology changes. Learning will focus on methods, processes, and systems applied to engineering functions, key engineering skills, practical application of theory, communications and building a knowledge of Caterpillar’s products, suppliers, and customers.

This individual must have good communication skills to effectively collaborate with various product development teams to deliver validated design solutions to our challenging machine program deliverables and timelines simultaneously.

Job Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in gathering application-specific requirements and develop preliminary concepts
  • Perform component engineering activity to meet product engineering targets & customer requirements
  • Conduct DFMEA, DVP & R (design verification plan & report)
  • Support/Lead design review meetings
  • Support Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) process and Concurrent Product and Process Development (CPPD) activity to ensure components are developed to meet time, cost, and quality requirements within budget
  • Support engineering solutions to fix quality issues for New Product Introduction (NPI) or Continuous Product Improvement (CPI)
  • Collaborate with other engineering team members, purchasing, suppliers, and Caterpillar product group customers
  • Conduct supplier collaboration sessions to support supplier selection and development
  • Some travel (10%) to Caterpillar product group customers, suppliers and Caterpillar manufacturing facilities is required
  • Organization: LPSD’s Global thermal management solutions [GTMS]

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering curriculum (Mechanical, Production or Manufacturing preferred) with 3+ years of engineering work experience with component design or validation responsibilities
  • Alternatively, a master’s degree in engineering curriculum (Mechanical, Production or Manufacturing preferred) with 1+ year engineering work experience with component design or validation responsibilities
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and good mechanical and/or electrical/electronic aptitude
  • Strong Interpersonal and communication skills in a team environment
  • Self-starter with good multitasking skills to optimize and deliver desired results under challenging requirements of quality, cost, and timelines

Top Candidates Will also Have:

  • Design control experience and good working knowledge of NPI and APQP process
  • CREO 3D modeling experience
  • Fluid lines design experience
  • Fabrication design experience
  • Thermal management system or component experience
  • Ability to manage multiple programs
